((I'm not new to this, but I have been out of the game for awhile, so please bear with me as I get reacquainted with the writer in me.))

Noel stood on top of a small hill, the incline just enough to view a part of the city below him. He had just crossed Winthrop, from east Boston, and had stopped just before entering the city. Newton City... Hm. It was true, he had come across several cities before that held the same promises this one did. Each one was the same; 'come to us, we'll keep you safe. We're a hardworking community rebuilding our lives, blah blah blah'. Each case ended with the same result too; they were traps, they were lost dreams, they were lies. But this one held something different, something that kept from just making his way around safely. A girl.

The rumors that his little girl and his ex-wife were here seemed too good to be true at the time. They were too far south and though his girl was a good little hunter, making it on their own with a disabled woman would be far too difficult, not with all the crazies and infected running around. Still, what if it was true? What if Sarah was there? The old timer's mind flashed back to three days ago; just after he was ambushed...

QUOTE
Crack. Bash. The punches were slow, methodical, and three of them later the cuffed captive slumped against the radiator and groaned low, his nose wheezing bubbles formed from his own blood and mucus. Noel stood slowly, panting as he shook his hand which still trembled from the adrenaline. "Now you stay right there...” he managed to mumble as he stumbled around to another captive, tied up in a chair. He grabbed a chair and pulled it around, plopping down in front as the captive struggled against his bonds.

"Where's the girl?"
"What? What girl?! I don't kno- ARGH!"

The knife popped into the right leg, just behind the knee cap and the man cried out, thrashing in his chair once more. The pain was unbearable, to be sure, and he seemed to want to pass out, but a couple slaps to the face brought him back into focus. “Right here, come on, look at me, stay with me here.” Once more Noel was in his face, “where’s the girl?”

“The hot-el… If she was in the city, she would be at the hotel! Everyone not crazy goes there!”

“That wasn't the question. Where is the girl?” He twisted the knife slowly, making the man cry out once more as his rag fell out of his mouth. “Oh god! She’s there! I swear! She’s there!” With that Noel pulled the knife out and stuck it quickly into the man’s mouth, the blade pointed it out. Pulling out a map, he held it up and pointed to it. “You’re going to mark on the map where the hotel is, got it? And it better be the same damn place your buddy points to!” The captive looked at his captor and then at the map and leaned forward, marking quickly a red ‘X’ than ran slowly down the paper. Noel put the map away and then took the knife out, standing as the man started shouting again.

“There! I told you! Now let us go, Jesus Christ, please!”

Noel walked past the man, staring down at his second captive, but didn't get any closer. As the first struggled in his bonds, Noel wrapped his arm around his neck tightly and squeezed, holding him as he put up a meager fight. His eyes never left the other as he held his prey, finally twisting to the side harshly and rewarded with a resounding crack. He let go of the body and it fell backward, dead before it hit the ground. The other captive stared at the lifeless body of his partner in disbelief before finally getting angry, as Noel came closer.

“Screw you, man! He told you what you wanted! I ain't going to tell you anything!”

Noel didn't go straight to the man, instead moving to a table on the side and grabbing a loose pipe. The very same weapon his last captive beat him senseless with only an hour ago. “That’s alright,” he said as he moved back to the last man, “I believe him.”

“No, wai- AH!” The pipe cut the man off in his final words as it slammed down against his head. A few more hits later and the body laid still, slumped against its prison. Noel left them there, grabbing his gear and the few provisions he had taken from them before. They were bandits, but he never could get around accepting what he was becoming. It seemed he traded blows more with his own intelligence than with the other crazies out there. Regardless, he was already committed to doing anything possible to find his daughter.

An hour later he was on the road, the house he was holed up in now in flames. He wasn't hiding his tracks; he wanted to put their memory to rest. He had found his ex-wife’s parents house. They had always been so nice to him, despite his upbringing. He found them both dead, mutilated in their bedroom. The vagabonds, the worthless scum he had put down, were making a residence in their basement. There were others, he counted at least five beds, but they hadn't been there and hadn't returned and he wasn't going to wait around for them. His next destination was finally set; he was heading for Newton City.

The process through the city was slow, but mostly quiet, so far. He lost his way twice, but ultimately found his way back onto the proper route. He couldn't see the hotel yet, but he was only on 2nd street according to his map, on his way back up to Midway, since that intersection of Sharpe was closed off. Hopefully, if he played his cards right, he’d be there before nightfall. Readjusting the strap to his hunting rifle once more, Noel picked up the pace.

Up ahead on Second, a woman's body stumbled out of a tall, glass-clad building, through a rotating door. She was backing toward the street, with blood splattered and spilled over the top half of her, soaked into her gray shirt. Her jeans and boots were dirty but in-tact, and the gun holster strapped to her side was empty . . .

As she tripped over the curb, she almost fell but remained upright, wavering. Then she came to a halt, staring at the door, waiting.

The sudden sound made him stop in his tracks, the gun in his hand instinctively rose at the new figure ahead of him. Blood stains, wavering, and an empty holster. Was it one of the crazies or a helpless woman? She was standing in the middle of the street, staring at the door she had come through earlier. Noel checked around him before he moved, edging forward just out of sight. His rifle was raised high, the scope focused in on the woman's head.

If she had been waiting for someone or something, it certainly wasn't what came through the door next.

Seemingly without any cue to do so, the woman that was standing there staring at the door stumbled into a run, bolting in the direction of Midway. She wasn't looking to stay on the street, though. As another body crashed through that door just a couple of seconds later, she took a turn to head across the way and into another building not too far away. The door to that building had already been broken down.

. . . which was good, because the battered and bloody mess that moved to chase her as it came out onto the street was running as fast as she was, if not faster. She didn't have time for too many barriers.

"H-hey!" A mistake in every survival book ever made, but it didn't stop Noel from instinctively crying out. As the woman took off, he only had time to take a step forward before the second body came crashing out. He lost his target the moment she moved and his hesitation caused him to lose sight on his second as it went running after the first woman, so he did the only thing he could do; run. He sprinted after the second runner, immediately judging it for a crazy, and when he saw he couldn't catch it, he instead moved to intercept it. The thing moved too fast for him to catch at the door and, intent on its original prey, took no notice to Noel as he almost tackled it as it went through the open door.

Cursing himself, he was on his feet again and after it, the chase gaining a third member as they barreled through the new building. He didn't have any ammo for the pistol and he didn't want to risk stopping to line up a shot right now, especially since the noise would draw anyone else in here to it. Instead he resolved to catch it and let his hatchet end its misery. Now if only he could find a way to gain its attenti--

Noel pulled out his hatchet and stopped, aiming only long enough to feel confident and then let it loose. The small ax spun into the air and dropped, catching the second runner in the back of the left calf, causing it to trip over itself and fall to the ground. It didn't have much time to struggle before Noel was on it, the weight of his rifle pressed down on its neck. The wound alone should've stopped it from its angry tantrum but it still raged, which was more than a big enough cue on what it really was. Pulling back for a second, Noel brought the butt of the gun down hard at the base of its neck, where the spine begins- again and again, until finally it stopped moving.

Breathing heavily and angered by the sudden realization that he had lost his hat, Noel leaned back and pulled out his hatchet, resolving to sit there a second in order to catch his breath.

The space beyond the entrance was mostly a lobby, open and without the kind of barriers one would hope to have in order to weave through and lose a tailing enemy.

Once inside, she headed for the back, seeing where the elevators were located, around the corner from the desk. Those elevators wouldn't work, but maybe there were stairs. Maybe there was time to head for a door instead, if there weren't stairs. . .

But ultimately she was saved from the threat that had her boots pounding against the slick tile of the floor and her eyes darting from wall to wall. The runner that had chased her went down with a thump and yet she didn't look back. What she heard didn't halt her. Instead, she went for that space at the back of the room where the elevators were and found a door. Stairway. She tore the door open and shut it firmly behind her after passing through.

Then she turned and put her back against the door and her hands on her head. Her eyes closed tightly. The silence there was only interrupted by the quick breaths she took as her body tried to recover from the chase.

Seconds passed. No gunshots, no interruptions. She has heard a sickening crack of bone beyond the door, but if there was danger, it would have followed by now, right? She wasn't sure. Her present understanding of time was terrible.

So, she grabbed the door handle and pushed, opening the door just enough to turn and take a look through, the opening located in such a way as to give her a straight shot of sight past the elevators and down one side of the lobby.

A creeper slid silently down the stairs. Had its arm not struck the wall on the way down, Frankie never would have noticed it. The combination of a hole through its chest and a cut in its throat rendered it completely mute. It's eyes however, were fully functional and fixed on the woman at the door.

The unexpected sound prompted Frankie to turn and look toward the stairs again. What she saw made her back away. He back pushed the door open, and she tripped out into the lobby again.

Clumsily, she fell and scrambled a few more feet away from the door to the stairway. Looking away from the door and into the lobby, she spotted the dead runner and the man who seemed to have out it down. There was no real comfort in that, however.

She was sandwiched between two threats with no weapon and a body that didn't want to fight anymore.

He heard the commotion before he saw it, having gotten back up to his feet; his eyes hungry for more. His hat was gone, his hair thrown all over, and a hatchet now in his hand; Noel was ready for anything. His eyes fixated on the woman that had stumbled into his line of sight, and there they stayed until the new threat presented itself from the door. Immediately the situation was analyzed; girl, no weapon, no fighting spirit left in that look of hers, new threat was one of those. Decision was made in a snap and he charged the creature, passing the woman in a whirl as he flew. Noel caught the creature just as it made it halfway through the opening, slamming the door shut in a quick push, trapping the beast in-between. It's fight was futile as the hatchet came down on its exposed neck, again and again. It's silent protests did little to stop Noels rage and soon it was still; allowing him to finally lean back and let the door slowly swing back open, letting the mangled remains fall to the ground in a wet slump.

His muscles hurt, his body wanted to fall and sleep for a thousand years, and yet he still stood his ground. Relaxing slightly, he lowered his arms and let the hatchet fall from his hand, focusing on a crack int he wall as he slowed his breathing, calming down. Finally he turned his head, catching the girl in his peripheral. He didn't say anything right away, choosing to turn his whole body instead to stare at her fully. He was unarmed, he was tired, and he showed it. "You gonna run again? I ain't gonna stop ya."

Frankie didn't flinch or shy away when she found the stranger hacking away at the creeper caught in the door. She didn't cower or even look away. If she was surprised, it didn't show. If she was disgusted, it wasn't enough to move her. She witnessed it all, staying right where she was, as still as she could be with the air rushing in and out of her burning lungs.

When the creature was properly dead, she could have relaxed some. It would have been justifiable, understandable, but no. Sitting there, tense and greedily taking in the air around her-- that was as much as she would allow herself, regardless of the trembling in her limbs and the difficulty of catching her breath.

She was a fit woman, muscled and well-conditioned, despite and because of the circumstances. Still, she was frazzled and weary, blood-stained and bruised.

"Are you gonna give me a reason to run?" she asked almost breathlessly, the airy words measured to allow her the air she needed as she continued to recover from the 'excitement'.

Adjusting herself on trembling arms, she moved to sit upright and pressed a hand to her side.

"Believe it or not-- I don't really feel like running."

Noel stared at the woman silently for a minute, before turning away to grab his hatchet. His body was screaming at him, he hadn't pushed himself properly in a week at least, but it felt good to get his blood running again. His muscles aching, he slipped his weapon back into its holder and then looked around. Turning back to her, Noel checked her over again taking a step forward. "Are you hurt?" He had some first aid supplies, not a lot that he was willing to share, but he was still human and couldn't help but ask.

"No weapon, running for your life; what are you doing here?" Why did he care? Still, she didn't immediately scream out as hostile to him, so maybe he could get some information from her.

"I'm fine," she stated bluntly. "Was looking for supplies. Got caught up."

It would have been nice to just sit for a while, but instead of accepting that as an option, she pushed herself forward, put her weight over her feet and slowly began to stand.

"Thanks for the help," she huffed.

"Hmph." He huffed back at her before briskly walking past her. "Well I'm bettin' it's gonna get dark soon, so you best run along now." he bent down and picked up his own pack, giving a quick check before he slipped his arms through the straps. His hands raked through his wet hair, slicking it back out of his face, then he turned back to her. "What's your name?"

She was in no hurry to move, so once she found her balance she turned to face the helpful stranger.

"Frankie," she said, her hands settling on her hips.

As more time passed without any major mishaps, she began to relax a little. She became more aware of what she looked like, where she was, the fact that the lack of immediate danger would never really qualify as 'safety'.

"You planning on needing to make use of my name for something?" she asked, stepping toward the center of the lobby and taking a look around.

"Just tryin' to be polite." People. So ungrateful, so defensive. Could he blame them? No, but he wanted to. Noel watched the woman as she moved towards the center of the lobby, adverting his eyes finally when he realized what he was doing. Kid, you're offly calm about this whole thing. Of course she would be, he was too, this kind of shit desensitized you after awhile. "Well, Frankie, it was a pleasure. Now if you'll excuse me, I have places to be."

He made a move to cross the lobby, eyeing his gun on the ground ahead of him. Several things could happen in the next few moments that could cause the death of him; he'd rather have the upper hand when dealing with the crazies.

Or a normal person.
