Welcome to Newton

Newton's history is somewhat complicated. It was settled sometime during the 1600s and proceeded to be abandoned and reclaimed over and over again for some time afterward. Somewhere along the line, more permanent residents began to commit to life on the island. Once two reliable bridges were made to connect the island to Winthrop in the 19th century, the development skyrocketed. By the time the 20th century rolled around, Newton had become Newton City. The Fairworth Hotel was the first proper hotel to accommodate the number of people coming in and out. It was during the early part of the 1900s that the business district expanded to cover a large portion of the island. . .

In more recent history, Newton has been a place of little importance to the country, but it became something of a haven for visitors to the Boston area who couldn't or preferred not to stay within the so-called 'capitol of New England'. Some tourists bothered to visit for the sake of seeing a few prominent locations, but most just passed through on their way to or from the nearby airport-- a favorite alternative to Logan Airport.

Maps of Newton's local attractions can be found here and there, including at the Fairworth. . .

* * * * *

The hotel, established in 1904, has quite the history. It was mostly rebuilt after a fire in 1928, but despite that and several re-modeling projects, it retains much of its original charm and character while having all of those fancy features-- like a sauna and memory foam pillows and biiiig televisions. If you can look past the blood stains, it's very homey.

What a lovely place to enjoy during an apocalypse.

The best features: Those added when the military took over the hotel. Around the beginning of September, the hotel was established as an emergency shelter-- at least it was supposed to be established as such. The surrounding courtyards and parking lots were fenced off (24ft. high perimeter, bowed fencing around the park and behind the hotel) along with Crystal Park. Supplies were dropped and stored on-site. The building was secured.

. . . but the military abandoned ship, so to speak, before the hotel had been properly set-up for business. By the time October rolled around, the place was empty, with many things left behind as evidence of the rushed evacuation.

Other quick facts:
  • 19 floors and a rooftop pool and spa area
  • 2 'diamond suites' on floor 18
  • Front courtyard contains two fountains and a large contemporary sculpture
  • Parking on three sides and beneath the hotel, with valet and employee parking in the levels below the hotel
  • Fairworth Ave. cuts between the hotel and Crystal Park, both of which are contained within the same perimeter, blocking passage on the street.
